Our history at Indian Hills in the cattle business has stretched across generations, trends in the cattle business, and personal experience that has left us richer in knowledge and passion for the business. I grew up helping my father run a commercial cow/calf business. We ran approximately a 1000 mother cow operation in Huntsville, Texas. During these years I saw first-hand the importance of sound, functional females. The type of female that was easy to maintain, possessed longevity, and consistently bred back in a timely fashion.
After graduating from Texas A&M with a BS in Agricultural Economics and attaining a law degree from the University of Houston, I started a commercial cattle operation of my own in East Texas. This operation consisted of running stocker yearlings and commercial cows. When we moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area this herd was liquidated.
I got back in the commercial cow/calf operation in 2000 in Johnson County when I purchased a set of twenty F1 tigerstripe first calf heifers and twenty Brangus first calf heifers. As we continued to grow this herd we noticed that we had to cull our F1's for bad eyes and udders, while our Brangus cattle didn't have these problems.
When we purchased Indian Hills Ranch in 2003, we made the decision to go with registered Brangus cattle because of our years of experience and the belief that the Brangus cow is the best female in the cattle business. Over the years we have seen many changes in the breed and type of cattle used in the business, and we have made changes along with the industry as to the optimum cow needed to fit the challenges of the day. But one thing remains the same, our belief in building the best animal possible for our customer and standing behind them.
